The Clearing House recently reported that its RTP Network reported two million transactions in a single day and set a new single-day value record of $8.36 billion. The network <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theclearinghouse.org\/payment-systems\/Articles\/2026\/02\/Cash-Flow-Needs-from-Consumers-and-Businesses-Drive-New-RTP-Network-Volume-and-Value-Records\">attributed this growth<\/a> to adoption across use cases like earned wage access (EWA) disbursements, gig economy payouts, and account-to-account transfers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cConsumers expect money to move quickly, whether that be from their employer, paying a friend, or a biller,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/javelinstrategy.com\/our-team\/ben-danner\">Ben Danner<\/a>, Senior Debit Analyst at Javelin Strategy &amp; Research. \u201cEWA is built around faster access to funds and the same could be said for working gig economy jobs like ridesharing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs budgets tighten, consumers are going to be moving their balances they may have built in wallets and P2P apps back into their banks checking account,\u201d he said. \u201cWe&#8217;ve seen growth in core deposits suggesting consumers are increasingly relying on their financial institution, which is generally perceived safer than app-based payments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-seeking-payments-alternatives\">Seeking Payments Alternatives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumers, meanwhile, continue to navigate persistent inflationary pressures. Many have leaned more heavily on credit cards, but rising default or delinquency risks have prompted lenders to tighten underwriting standards, reduce credit lines, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paymentsjournal.com\/bank-of-america-overhauls-credit-card-program-to-boost-customer-base\/\">focus more on affluent segments.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, alternative payment methods have gained traction. Buy now, pay later (BNPL) services have skyrocketed in popularity, even as overall credit card debt levels remain elevated\u2014both a signal of consumer strain and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paymentsjournal.com\/fast-installment-loans-growth-card-managers-beware\/\">a growing concern<\/a> for traditional issuers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-keeping-funds-in-house\">Keeping Funds In-House<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These factors have made real-time payments an attractive alternative for debt-laden consumers. BY enabling consumers to hold onto funds until the moment a payment is due, these systems provide a powerful cash flow management tool. That dynamic helps explain why the RTP Network has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paymentsjournal.com\/rtp-tops-single-day-record-with-over-1-8-million-transactions\/\">continued to expand <\/a>even after the launch of the Federal Reserve\u2019s FedNow instant payments service two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, both networks continue to post new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paymentsjournal.com\/with-more-institutions-on-board-fednow-notches-volume-and-value-gains\/\">volume and value records<\/a>.
