{"id":527207,"date":"2026-04-07T14:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T18:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.paymentsjournal.com\/?p=527207"},"modified":"2026-04-07T14:00:43","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T18:00:43","slug":"unseen-momentum-could-be-mounting-behind-the-yuan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paymentsjournal.com\/unseen-momentum-could-be-mounting-behind-the-yuan\/","title":{"rendered":"Unseen Momentum Could Be Mounting Behind the Yuan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The U.S. dollar dominates global finance, but that dominance may face a credible challenge sooner than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harvard economist Kenneth Rogoff recently suggested that the Chinese yuan could become <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/markets\/currencies\/articles\/yuan-not-crypto-challenge-dollar-233358369.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a global reserve currency<\/a> within five years, potentially rivaling even the fast-growing digital assets industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, the dollar\u2019s position remains deeply entrenched. According to data from the U.S. Reserve, it accounts for 58% of international transactions and has long been regarded as a safe haven currency. Beyond <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/econres\/notes\/feds-notes\/the-international-role-of-the-u-s-dollar-2025-edition-20250718.html#:~:text=As%20shown%20in%20Figure%202,Chinese%20renminbi%20(2%20percent).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cross-border payments<\/a>, it also maintains a strong hold over the rapidly expanding stablecoin market. Many of the world\u2019s leading payments networks are U.S.-centric, including the global systems operated by Visa and Mastercard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This dollar-heavy global financial ecosystem has proven difficult to displace, reinforcing the currency\u2019s central role in global commerce\u2014even as geopolitical tensions and trade conflicts have intensified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China, however, has been working to change that. It has long sought to expand the role of the yuan in global payments. Although these efforts have yet to gain much traction\u2014the Fed estimates the yuan is used in only around 2% of cross-border payments\u2014there are signs that its role could grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bucking-western-estimates\">Bucking Western Estimates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the South China Post, one reason Western estimates of yuan usage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3348907\/chinas-yuan-may-be-going-global-faster-western-data-suggests-analysts-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">may be understated <\/a>is that they don\u2019t fully account for transactions conducted through China\u2019s Cross-Border Interbank Payments System (CIPS). Developed as an alternative to the U.S.-backed SWIFT\u2014a cornerstone of global payments\u2014CIPS has become a crucial part of China\u2019s strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China has prioritized expanding CIPS, even easing some regulations to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paymentsjournal.com\/in-cross-border-push-china-eases-payments-with-vietnam-indonesia\/\">introduce new programs<\/a> with countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia. These cross-border integrations enable QR code transfers, allowing domestic merchants to accept payments from Chinese travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cementing-the-currency-s-standing\">Cementing the Currency\u2019s Standing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Separately, China has also focused on its central bank digital currency\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.paymentsjournal.com\/government-backing-and-cross-border-payments-fuel-digital-yuan\/\">the digital yuan<\/a>\u2014which has gained more ground than many other CBDCs globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, the yuan is far from challenging the U.S. dollar. Rogoff acknowledged this and laid out steps China could take to further cement the currency\u2019s global standing, including opening its government bond markets to foreign investors and continuing to expand CIPS as a viable alternative to SWIFT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many ways, China\u2019s payments strategy mirrors that of the European Union, which has also reprioritized its CBDC efforts and sought to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paymentsjournal.com\/the-eu-seeks-to-break-its-dependence-on-visa-mastercard-rails\/\">bolster the euro\u2019s role<\/a> in cross-border payments.
