{"id":529171,"date":"2026-04-29T14:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T18:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.paymentsjournal.com\/?p=529171"},"modified":"2026-04-29T13:02:53","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T17:02:53","slug":"japan-issues-new-prepaid-cards-exclusively-for-tourists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paymentsjournal.com\/japan-issues-new-prepaid-cards-exclusively-for-tourists\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan Issues New Prepaid Cards Exclusively for Tourists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tourists traveling to Japan will soon have a simpler way to get around\u2014a prepaid transit card designed specifically for short-term visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelandtourworld.com\/news\/article\/japan-introduces-prepaid-travel-card-for-tourists-to-make-cashless-journeys-easier-faster-and-more-convenient-nationwide\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.travelandtourworld.com\/news\/article\/japan-introduces-prepaid-travel-card-for-tourists-to-make-cashless-journeys-easier-faster-and-more-convenient-nationwide\/\">Pasmo Co<\/a>, which issues cards for Tokyo&#8217;s widely used train system, will introduce the new card, valid for 28 days and accepted for cashless payments across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tourist Pasmo will be available at vending machines and ticket offices in major transportation hubs, including Tokyo\u2019s two main airports. It enables tap-and-go travel across public transportation networks, as well as payments at many shops and vending systems. It can be recharged during the 28-day period, though any remaining balance is nonrefundable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pricing varies by airport. At Narita Airport, the card costs a flat 2,000 yen. At Haneda Airport, travelers can load between 1,000 yen and 10,000 yen at purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-travel-is-the-sweet-spot\">Travel Is the Sweet Spot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The card is especially useful for first-time visitors navigating Japan\u2019s extensive\u2014and sometimes confusing\u2014transit system. It simplifies access to trains, subways, and buses, reducing fare confusion and speeding up travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt Javelin, we see a lot of trends in self-use of prepaid cards, and a plan like this matches several of the key reasons why individuals buy prepaid cards for personal use: convenience, budgeting and safety,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/javelinstrategy.com\/our-team\/jordan-hirschfield\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jordan Hirschfield<\/a>, Director of Prepaid at Javelin Strategy &amp; Research. \u201cWe also found that 25% of prepaid users do so to pay for expenses while traveling. By embracing these trends, this becomes a really novel approach to ease the burdens of travel and currency conversion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hirschfield said he is not aware of other countries taking such a direct approach to prepaid travel tourist transit cards. Pasmo previously offered a similar product, Pasmo Passport, which was discontinued in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-souvenir-of-japan\">A Souvenir of Japan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pasmo also hopes travelers will keep the card as a souvenir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>East Japan Railway offers a more limited alternative, Welcome Suica, which focuses on eastern Japan, and is available only on iPhone, not on Android devices.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tourists traveling to Japan will soon have a simpler way to get around\u2014a prepaid transit card designed specifically for short-term visitors.
